The VMware SD-WAN Edge Reset Procedure
The VMware SD-WAN Edge Reset Procedure
There are a number of scenarios in which resetting a VMware SD-WAN Edge is necessary which are as follows:
- In order to activate the Edge at its new location, it must first have its configuration cleared, as it is being repurposed for another client site.
- We propose doing a hard reset to revert the Edge to factory defaults and then activating it to the client site to see if it fixes the issue. VMware SD-WAN Support has ruled out numerous other probable causes.
- Even after several power cycles, if the Edge is still unresponsive or unavailable. Because of this, a hard reset should be performed as a last resort before considering replacing the Edge.
Difference between Soft reset and Hard reset:-
The Edge is deactivated or “soft reset,” which means that its current configuration is erased and it returns to its original factory settings. Having said that, the Edge software remains unaltered and continues to use the same build from before the soft reset. You can reactivate Edge after a soft reset and use it on the same or a different site.
“Hard Reset” returns the Edge to its original, factory-settings-restoring state. In addition to reverting to the factory settings and turning off the Edge, the software on the device is also set to the factory build. In all practicality, this Edge is in the same condition as when it left the manufacturer.
Process to do Soft Reset using the Vmware Orchestrator GUI:-
Using the Orchestrator, you can gently deactivate or reset an Edge. Because of this, an enterprise administrator can complete the task quickly and easily without requiring anyone to be physically present at the Edge. Below are the steps:-Step – 1 Select the Edge you want to soft reset on the Orchestrator.
Step – 2 Choose Remote Actions from the menu on the left.
Step – 3 Choose “Deactivate” from the Remote Actions menu.
Step – 4 After seeing the last warning, click “Yes” to finalize the deactivation of this Edge.
Following confirmation of the Deactivate command, the Orchestrator will transmit the signal to turn off the Edge and erase its configuration. The administrator will be unable to communicate with the Edge via the Orchestrator, and the Edge will be displayed as offline in the Orchestrator.
Process to reset the VMware SD-WAN Edge using local user interface, either through “Soft reset” or “Hard Reset”:-
The Edge’s local web user interface allows the user to do a hard reset or a soft reset, depending on their preference.
Verifying that a local PC can connect to the Edge via a LAN connection is the initial step.
The Orchestrator is where you’ll set up the LAN side edge access, below will be the steps:
Step – 1 To modify the Edge Access Firewall configuration, go to Configure > Edge > Firewall and then scroll down to change this settings.
Step – 2 If it isn’t already chosen, make sure to enable edge override.
Step – 3 Choose Allow the Following IPs under Local Web UI Access. Then, enter the IP address of the client device that will connect to the Edge. Finally, click Save Changes.
As a matter of best security practices, the user should remember to deselect this option once the reset is done, even though it may be simpler to pick Allow All LAN for this part.
Once you have validated LAN side edge access, the following actions can be taken:Step – 1 Connect the Client PC to the Edge (via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection, depending on your preference).
Step – 2 Launch a web browser and type edge.velocloud.net (or the IP address of the LAN side) into the field provided.
Step – 3 The request for local authentication credentials will be asked.
Be aware that the Orchestrator displays Edge local credentials in the following way: Configure -> Edge -> Edge Overview, and then select the View option next to Local Credentials.
Step – 4 After logging into the Edge’s Local UI, look for Details in the bottom right corner.
Step – 5 Choose “Reset Settings” from the Details page.
Step – 6 To reset the Edge, go to the Reset Settings page and look for two options:
a) Select Reset Configuration to soft reset or deactivate the Edge.
b. Selecting Hard-Reset will hard reset the Edge.
Step –7 Authentication is required for both options, thus the user must once again input their local credentials.
Step –8 After the credentials are verified, the Edge will begin the requested type of reset and reboot to finish.
