Unit 1: Network Infrastructure
This will allow you to demonstrate your networking skills, knowledge, and abilities, with a focus on enterprise-level switching, routing, and multicast components that support cross-platform (inter)operability and integration with the most recent software-defined technologies.

Spanning Tree Port States

Through the use of Rapid Spanning Tree 802.1w, the number of port states was reduced from 5 to 3. This lesson provides information regarding the five STP port states for the 802.1d Spanning Tree, and then Rapid Spanning Tree.

Spanning Tree 802.1d

  • Disabled: During the disabled state, a port is not regarded to be operational because it does not take part in frame forwarding and is deemed to be disabled.
  • Blocking: This indicates that the port is actively listening for and processing BPDUs when it is in the blocking state. Immediately following the passage of 20 seconds, the switch port transitions from the blocking state to the listening state.
  • Listening: After the blocking process is complete, a root port or a designated port will transition into a listening state. Frames that have been received from the associated network segment are discarded by the port while it is in the listening mode. Additionally, frames that have been switched from other ports for forwarding are likewise discarded. In this condition, the port is responsible for receiving BPDUs from the network segment and then sending them to the switch system module so that they can be processed from there. A transition from the listening state to the learning state occurs in the switch port after 15 seconds have passed.
  • Learning: A port moves from the listening state to the learning state. While the port is in the learning mode, it is actively processing and listening for BPDUs. When the port is in the listening state, it begins to process user frames and begins to update the MAC address table. The destination does not receive any user frames that are sent there. 15 seconds later, the switch port transitions from the learning mode to the forwarding mode.
