Unit 1: Network Infrastructure
This will allow you to demonstrate your networking skills, knowledge, and abilities, with a focus on enterprise-level switching, routing, and multicast components that support cross-platform (inter)operability and integration with the most recent software-defined technologies.
Anyone who knows how to use the NBMA model can also use the Point-to-Multipoint model on any network. The Point-to-Multipoint approach is different because it doesn’t need all routers on the subnet to be able to talk to each other directly. It works the same way as if you thought of each connection as a serial line or a group of P2P links. Unlike the NBMA network type, it is more reliable because failures can be limited to link pairs. For example, if a PVC between two routers fails, it won’t affect the stability of the rest of the network. With a Demand Circuit set up, the Point-to-Multipoint approach works great.
Point-to-multipoint networks lack both BDRs and DRs. The Hello protocol is designed to identify and show instances of bidirectional communication between neighbors. Depending on the type of underlying Layer 2 network, neighborships can occur dynamically in certain cases and require manual configuration in others.
All of the routers in a Point-to-Multipoint network move closer together so that they may communicate with each other directly. Multiple neighbors can become nearby on a single interface, in contrast to the Point-to-Point approach.
The following links are included in the router LSA of a router operating on a point-to-multipoint subnet:
- a point-to-point connection on the Point-to-Multipoint subnet for each of its neighbors
- to its own IP address, a single Stub network connection
Looking at the Point-to-Multipoint network from outside the linked segment, all you can see is a bunch of endpoints—not a transit segment at all.
