Access Ports

An access port is the one which functions similarly to a connection on a switch. Its purpose is to provide computers with connectivity through a switch or a VLAN. In its most basic form, it is responsible for transmitting data to and from a single VLAN. Being able to work with it is not very efficient when dealing with complex networks. The performance of the access port can be optimized by configuring the port as a host port, which is something that can be done.

Advantages

  • It receives and sends frames that aren’t tagged.
  • Given that the frame stays in a single VLAN, there are no signal problems in the access port.

Disadvantages

It can only transport data for a single VLAN.

A host port can only be assigned to an end station.
