OSPF Router ID

The router communicates its neighbor information to all of the other routers in the network. When using OSPF, one router is chosen to serve as the Designated Router, and another router is chosen to serve as the Backup Designated Router (BDR). The reason we elect them is so that we may exercise control over the amount of information that is transmitted across the network that is repetitious. All of the routers in the network are required to report to the DR, and the DR is responsible for communicating this information to the other routers in the network.

The multicast addresses 225.0.0.6 and 225.0.0.5 are used by OSPF.

The OSPF Router ID is:

  • A router’s unique identifier in a network, it consists of 32 bits.
  • Used in the election for DR/BDR.
  • In an autonomous system, it is absolutely unique.

Election of Router-ID:

  • Manually configured within OSPF.
  • An interface designated as loopback with the highest IP.
  • Highest IP assigned to an active interface
